Here's the thing with guar gum and your Movantik: guar gum forms a thick gel in your gut that can soak up and slow the absorption of pills taken around the same time. Naloxegol works right there in your bowel to ease the constipation caused by opioid pain medicines. If guar gum traps some of it, less may get absorbed, and you might notice it just doesn't relieve your constipation as well.

This is a moderate, fairly plausible concern based on real-world data with other oral drugs. An easy fix is spacing them out. Naloxegol is usually taken on an empty stomach, so take your guar gum at least 30 to 60 minutes afterward, and run the timing by your pharmacist to be safe.

What Is Naloxegol Used For?

Brand name: Movantik

Movantik (naloxegol) is used to treat opioid-induced constipation (OIC) — constipation caused by opioid pain medications — in adults who have chronic non-cancer pain. It is also approved for adults with chronic pain related to prior cancer or its treatment, as long as they don't need frequent (roughly weekly) increases in their opioid dose.

It is not indicated for constipation from other causes, and it is not approved for use in children.
