Here's the thing to keep in mind with Wakix (pitolisant) and guar gum. Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your stomach and gut it can grab onto pills and slow or reduce how much of them your body actually soaks up. Pitolisant is an active drug (not a prodrug that needs converting), so less absorption simply means less drug working for you.

In plain terms, if guar gum blunts your dose, you might notice the medication doesn't control your daytime sleepiness or cataplexy as well as usual. The easy fix is timing: take your pitolisant first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food-sized amounts of fiber are unlikely to be a big deal, but concentrated supplements are worth spacing out. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What Is Pitolisant Used For?

Brand name: Wakix

Wakix (pitolisant) is used to treat two hallmark problems of narcolepsy: excessive daytime sleepiness (feeling overwhelmingly tired and unable to stay awake during the day) and cataplexy (sudden episodes of muscle weakness or loss of muscle control, often triggered by emotion). It is approved for adults and children 6 years of age and older.

Both uses are specific to Wakix tablets taken by mouth. The drug is not approved for sleepiness or cataplexy caused by conditions other than narcolepsy.
