Here's the gist with guar gum and pravastatin: because guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach and intestines, it can grab onto a pill and slow or reduce how much of it you actually absorb. Pravastatin is not a prodrug, so this isn't about activation. The concern is simply that less of your statin may get into your body, which could make it work less well at lowering your LDL ('bad') cholesterol.

The fix is easy and the evidence here is only moderate. Just space them out: take your pravastatin first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum supplement. Food-level amounts of guar are unlikely to be a problem. If you use a concentrated fiber product regularly, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your cholesterol numbers.

What Is Pravastatin Used For?

Brand name: Pravachol

Pravastatin Sodium tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides (blood fats), and abnormal cholesterol levels. They are approved for adults and for children ages 8 and older with a hereditary form of high cholesterol called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH).

In people without known heart disease, pravastatin helps reduce the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular death. In people who already have coronary heart disease (CHD), it is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, coronary death, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and procedures to restore blood flow to the heart — and to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries.
