Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When you take it close to a pill like Epclusa (sofosbuvir and velpatasvir), that gel can grab onto the medicine in your gut and slow or lower how much of it actually gets absorbed. We've seen this happen with other oral drugs like metformin and penicillin, so it's a reasonable concern here too.

With hepatitis C treatment, absorbing the full dose really matters. You want steady, reliable drug levels so the virus is fully cleared, and getting less than intended could weaken how well it works. To stay safe, the usual advice is to space them out: take your Epclusa first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Please run the timing by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What Is Sofosbuvir and Velpatasvir Used For?

Brand name: Epclusa

Sofosbuvir and velpatasvir treats chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection caused by genotypes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 — covering all the major strains. It is approved for adults and children 3 years of age and older, whether or not they have cirrhosis (liver scarring).

It is used on its own in patients without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis (where the liver is scarred but still functioning). In patients with decompensated cirrhosis (more advanced liver disease where the liver is no longer coping), it is used in combination with another medicine called ribavirin. Epclusa is a brand that is also available as oral pellets for younger children.
