Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you swallow it close to your spironolactone, that gel can grab onto the pill and slow or lower how much of it your body actually absorbs. Less drug getting in could mean weaker effects, like less help with your blood pressure, fluid buildup, or potassium balance.

This is rated a moderate, possible interaction based on limited clinical data, so it isn't a reason to panic. An easy fix is timing: take your spironolactone first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum, and drink plenty of water with the fiber. About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
