Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine Tannate, Phenylephrine Tannate
Chlorpheniramine Tannate, Phenylephrine Tannate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Guggul interacts with.
In vitro research shows that guggul constituents known as guggulsterones can induce CYP3A4.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
This combo product pairs an antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) for sneezing and runny nose with a decongestant (phenylephrine) for stuffiness. The thinking here is that guggul might gently rev up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways that helps break these medicines down. If that happens, your body could clear them a bit faster, which in theory might make them work a little less well, so you may notice less relief from congestion or allergy symptoms.
I want to be straight with you though: this concern comes only from lab and test-tube studies, not from real people, so it's quite theoretical. Neither of these drugs is a prodrug, so the direction (slightly weaker effect) makes sense. If you take both regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
