Eszopiclone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Guggul interacts with.

Theoretically, guggul might reduce the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that guggul constituents known as guggulsterones can induce CYP3A4.

Here's the gist for your sleep medication. Eszopiclone (Lunesta) is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest the active parts of guggul, the guggulsterones, may speed that enzyme up. If that happens in people, your body could break down Lunesta a little faster, which might leave you with a weaker sleep aid that doesn't help you fall asleep or stay asleep as well.

I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from real patient studies, so we honestly don't know how much it matters in everyday use. Lunesta is not a prodrug, so this points toward less effect, not more. If you take both, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Eszopiclone Used For?

Brand name: Lunesta

Eszopiclone tablets — sold under the brand name Lunesta and as generics — are indicated for the treatment of insomnia. In clinical studies, eszopiclone helped people fall asleep more quickly (reduced sleep latency) and stay asleep through the night (improved sleep maintenance).

Clinical trials supporting its effectiveness lasted up to 6 months in adults and up to 2 weeks in elderly patients. Lunesta and eszopiclone generics are approved for this same indication across the available tablet formulations.
