Why this applies to Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir

Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Guggul interacts with.

Theoretically, guggul might reduce the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that guggul constituents known as guggulsterones can induce CYP3A4.

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing guggul and your hepatitis C combo (Technivie). Lab studies hint that guggul's active compounds, the guggulsterones, may speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4. Since paritaprevir and ombitasvir are handled by that same enzyme system, revving it up could lower the levels of these drugs in your blood. In plain terms, your treatment might not work as well at clearing the hepatitis C virus, which is a big deal when you're trying to cure an infection.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical worry based only on test-tube research, not human studies, so we don't truly know how much it matters. Still, because successful hep C treatment is so important, I'd skip the guggul and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir Ritonavir page

“Technivie (ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir) treats hepatitis C, and because a cure depends on holding steady drug levels for the whole course, this list warrants genuine care. Most of the 154 ingredients on file touch the CYP3A4 enzyme pathway, meaning they can push the drug's blood levels up or down.”

About Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir

What Is Ombitasvir, Paritaprevir, and Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Technivie

  • The combination of ombitasvir, paritaprevir, and ritonavir is usually used in combination with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol), but sometimes it is used alone to treat a certain type of chronic (long-term) hepatitis C infection (swelling of the liver caused by a virus). Ombitasvir is a hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS5A inhibitor. It works by stopping the virus that causes hepatitis C from spreading inside the body. Paritaprevir is a protease inhibitor. It works by decreasing the amount of HCV in the body. Ritonavir is a protease inhibitor. It helps to increase the amount of paritaprevir in the body so that the medication will have a greater effect. It is not known if ombitasvir, paritaprevir, or ritonavir prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
