What Is Odevixibat Used For?

Brand name: Bylvay

Bylvay (odevixibat) is used to treat pruritus — intense, chronic itching caused by bile acid buildup — in patients with rare liver conditions. For progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), Bylvay is approved for patients as young as 3 months old. For Alagille syndrome (ALGS), it is approved for patients 12 months and older.

There is an important limitation: Bylvay is not recommended for a specific subgroup of PFIC type 2 patients who carry certain gene variants (ABCB11) that result in a non-functional or completely absent bile salt export pump protein.
