Maraviroc falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the gist with Hu Zhang and your maraviroc. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear maraviroc out of your system. Hu Zhang carries resveratrol, which in lab dishes can slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, maraviroc could build up a little higher than expected, which might mean more of its usual side effects like dizziness, headache, belly upset, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It's theoretical, based mostly on test-tube work, and one human study using a hefty resveratrol dose didn't force any dose changes. Still, maraviroc is an important HIV medicine, so don't add Hu Zhang without checking with your pharmacist or HIV provider first.

About Maraviroc

What Is Maraviroc Used For?

Brand names: Celsentri, Selzentry

Maraviroc treats a specific type of HIV-1 infection called CCR5-tropic HIV-1. It is always used alongside other antiretroviral (anti-HIV) medicines — never alone. A special test called a tropism assay must be done before starting treatment to confirm you have the right type of HIV.

Selzentry (the brand-name oral solution and tablet) is approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 2 kg. Generic maraviroc tablets are approved for adults and pediatric patients aged 2 years and older weighing at least 10 kg. Neither form is recommended for patients whose HIV is classified as dual/mixed-tropic or CXCR4-tropic.
