nilotinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the basic idea with Hu Zhang and nilotinib (Tasigna). Nilotinib is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab studies looks like it could slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, nilotinib could build up a little higher than expected, which might mean more side effects like nausea, fatigue, headache, or changes to your heart's rhythm (a QT effect that doctors watch closely with this drug).

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical, based mostly on test-tube data, and one human study using a big resveratrol dose didn't force any dose changes. Still, nilotinib is a serious cancer medicine with a narrow safety window, so please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before combining them.

About Nilotinib

What Is Nilotinib Used For?

Brand name: Tasigna

  • Nilotinib is used to treat certain types of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have recently found to have this condition in adults and children 1 year of age and older. It is also used to treat certain types of CML in adults whose disease could not be treated successfully with imatinib (Gleevec) or adults who cannot take imatinib because of side effects. Nilotinib is also used to treat certain types of CML in children 1 year of age or older whose disease could not be treated successfully with other tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies or who cannot take these medications because of side effects. Nilotinib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of the abnormal protein that signals cancer cells to multiply. This helps to stop or slow the spread of cancer cells.
