Pimozide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, a clinical study in adults with NAFLD found that adding resveratrol 3000 mg daily for 8 weeks did not necessitate dose adjustments to any established medications metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Your body clears pimozide using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Hu Zhang contains resveratrol, which in lab studies may slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let pimozide build up a little more than expected, nudging up the chance of side effects like drowsiness, restlessness, or stiffness.

The real concern with pimozide is its effect on heart rhythm. Higher levels can lengthen the QT interval and, rarely, trigger dangerous heartbeats, so even small shifts deserve respect. That said, this is a theoretical worry from lab work, and one human study didn't require dose changes. Still, because pimozide is a sensitive drug, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Hu Zhang.

What Is Pimozide Used For?

Brand name: Orap

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or words) in people with Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by their tics — it is not intended as a first-line treatment, and it is not used for tics that are mild or mainly cosmetic concerns.

Pimozide is not meant for tics caused by other conditions or medications, and it should not be used for simple tics unrelated to Tourette's Disorder.
