Thioridazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Hu Zhang interacts with.

Theoretically, hu zhang might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
Hu zhang contains the constituent resveratrol. In vitro research shows that resveratrol might inhibit the CYP2C19 enzyme. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with thioridazine (Mellaril) and Hu Zhang. The resveratrol in Hu Zhang may, at least in lab studies, slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 that helps clear thioridazine. If that enzyme is blocked, thioridazine could build up in your body and hit harder than expected. With thioridazine that's worth watching, because higher levels can mean more drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and constipation, and this drug already carries a known risk of affecting your heart rhythm (QT prolongation).

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical, based on test-tube data, and hasn't been seen in real people. Casual amounts likely matter less than concentrated supplements. Still, given thioridazine's heart concerns, please run any Hu Zhang use by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Thioridazine Used For?

Brand name: Mellaril

Thioridazine Hydrochloride tablets are used for the management of schizophrenia — but only in patients who have already tried at least two other antipsychotic medications without adequate results, either because those drugs didn't work well enough or caused intolerable side effects.

Because thioridazine carries serious heart-rhythm risks, it is considered a last-resort option for schizophrenia, not a first-line treatment. It is not approved for dementia-related psychosis or any other psychiatric condition.
