Spironolactone falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Indian Cassia interacts with.

Theoretically, Indian cassia might increase the risk of potassium depletion in patients taking diuretic drugs. However, this has not been shown in humans. Indian cassia leaf extract 200-400 mg/kg body weight has shown mild diuretic activity in animal research. The effect of Indian cassia on urine volume and electrolyte loss was similar to that of furosemide. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's a fun wrinkle with this pairing. The concern on file is that Indian Cassia might act like a mild water pill itself and push more electrolytes out in the urine, similar to what was seen in animal studies. But spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic, meaning it actually holds onto potassium rather than dumping it. So the two work in somewhat opposite directions on potassium.

Honestly, this interaction is theoretical and comes only from lab and animal research, not from people. The amounts of tejpat you'd use to flavor a curry are very unlikely to do anything here. If you take concentrated Cinnamomum tamala supplements or oils alongside spironolactone, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up, since combining things that affect fluid and electrolytes deserves a quick check. No need to worry over the bay leaf in your cooking.

Indian Cassia (Cinnamomum tamala), also known as Indian bay leaf or tejpat, is an aromatic leaf used widely as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine across South Asia. Human evidence for its health benefits is very limited, so it is best enjoyed as a culinary spice rather than relied on to treat any condition. About Spironolactone

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
