Hydrochlorothiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Indian Cassia interacts with.

Theoretically, Indian cassia might increase the risk of potassium depletion in patients taking diuretic drugs. However, this has not been shown in humans. Indian cassia leaf extract 200-400 mg/kg body weight has shown mild diuretic activity in animal research. The effect of Indian cassia on urine volume and electrolyte loss was similar to that of furosemide. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the gist: hydrochlorothiazide already nudges your kidneys to flush out water and salt, and one thing it can lower is your potassium. In animal studies, Indian cassia extract showed its own mild water-pill-like effect. So in theory, pairing the two might add up and pull potassium a little lower than the medication alone would.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is based on lab and animal work at large doses, and it has not been shown in people. Using a couple of bay leaves to flavor your cooking is very unlikely to matter. The bigger question is concentrated cassia capsules or oils taken regularly. If you go that route, watch for signs of low potassium like muscle cramps, weakness, or feeling unusually tired, and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
