Indapamide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Indian Cassia interacts with.

Theoretically, Indian cassia might increase the risk of potassium depletion in patients taking diuretic drugs. However, this has not been shown in humans. Indian cassia leaf extract 200-400 mg/kg body weight has shown mild diuretic activity in animal research. The effect of Indian cassia on urine volume and electrolyte loss was similar to that of furosemide. Until more is known, use with caution.

Here's the simple version: indapamide is a water pill that makes you pee out extra salt and water, and one thing it can already lower is your potassium. In animal studies, concentrated Indian Cassia extract acted a bit like a diuretic too, similar to furosemide. So the worry is that stacking the two could push potassium down a little further, which can cause muscle cramps, weakness, or an irregular heartbeat.

That said, this is theoretical and has only been seen in lab and animal research, not in people. Using bay leaf (tejpat) as a cooking spice is very unlikely to matter. The caution is really about concentrated supplements or oils. If you want to use those, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your potassium.

Indian Cassia (Cinnamomum tamala), also known as Indian bay leaf or tejpat, is an aromatic leaf used widely as a cooking spice and in traditional medicine across South Asia. Human evidence for its health benefits is very limited, so it is best enjoyed as a culinary spice rather than relied on to treat any condition. Used as food it is generally well tolerated, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements or oils.

What Is Indapamide Used For?

Brand names: Lozol, Lozide

Indapamide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either on their own or together with other blood pressure medications. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of related complications.

Indapamide tablets are also used to treat salt and fluid retention (edema) associated with congestive heart failure. In certain cases, indapamide may also be appropriate during pregnancy when swelling is caused by a medical condition rather than normal pregnancy changes — but routine use in otherwise healthy pregnant women is not recommended.
