Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: gliclazide already works hard to bring your blood sugar down by prompting your body to release more insulin. Ivy gourd appears to nudge blood sugar lower too. Put them together and those effects can add up, so your sugar may drop further than you expect.

That raises the chance of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, a fast heartbeat, confusion, or feeling suddenly weak or hungry. This isn't a far-fetched worry. A good-quality study supports it. The fix isn't to quit anything on your own. Instead, check your blood sugar more often and tell your pharmacist or doctor before you start ivy gourd so they can guide you safely.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Gliclazide page

“Gliclazide (Diamicron) lowers blood sugar on its own, so a supplement list this long deserves real respect. Most of the entries are herbs and nutrients that also drop glucose, fenugreek, bitter melon, and ginseng among them, and stacking them on top can tip you into hypoglycemia, meaning blood sugar low enough to cause shakiness, sweat…”

About Ivy Gourd

What is Ivy Gourd?

  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive complaints
  • Skin conditions
  • General wellness and nutrition

Ivy gourd is a tropical vine widely eaten as a vegetable and used in traditional medicine, most often for blood sugar support. Early human research hints it may modestly lower blood sugar, but the evidence is limited and not strong enough to replace standard diabetes care. If you have diabetes or take medicine, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using ivy gourd supplements.
