Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: dexmedetomidine (Precedex, Igalmi) is already a powerful sedative, given in hospitals and clinics to calm and relax people. Jamaican dogwood has its own calming, sleep-promoting properties. Put the two together and those sedating effects can stack on top of each other.

What that could look like in practice is feeling extra drowsy or groggy, plus dexmedetomidine's usual effects like a slower heart rate and lower blood pressure becoming more pronounced. I'll be honest though, this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than real patient reports. Since dexmedetomidine is normally given under medical supervision anyway, just make sure your care team knows about any Jamaican dogwood before they dose you.
