CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Brexanolone
Brexanolone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Jamaican Dogwood interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: brexanolone (Zulresso) is a strong sedating medicine. It's actually given as a slow IV drip in a healthcare setting, and one of its known effects is making people very drowsy, sometimes even causing sudden loss of consciousness. Jamaican dogwood is traditionally used to calm and help with sleep, so the worry is that the two together could add up and make you too sleepy.
This caution is theoretical, based on how these things work rather than real patient reports, so I don't want to alarm you. Brexanolone isn't a prodrug, so this is simply about overlapping calming effects, not a metabolism problem. Since brexanolone is given under close medical supervision anyway, mention any supplements to your care team before treatment.
