ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Naproxen Sodium
Naproxen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Japanese Persimmon interacts with.
Some anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, indomethacin (Indocin), ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with naproxen, the pain and inflammation reliever found in products like Aleve and Midol Extended Relief. Naproxen already nudges your blood toward being a little less likely to clot, which is part of why heavy or long-term use can lead to stomach upset, ulcers, or bleeding. The concern with Japanese persimmon leaf is that some of its plant compounds showed anticoagulant activity in lab dish studies, so in theory it could add to naproxen's bleeding-related effects.
I'll be honest though, this is purely theoretical. It has only been seen in test tubes, never in people, and eating the fruit as food is not the worry here. If you're using persimmon leaf extracts regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and watch for easy bruising or unusual bleeding.
