ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Diltiazem
Diltiazem falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Japanese Persimmon interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the gist: persimmon may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Since diltiazem already relaxes your blood vessels to bring your pressure down, pairing the two could add up and push your numbers a little too low. This isn't about persimmon changing how your body breaks down diltiazem; it's simply two things tugging in the same direction.
If your blood pressure dips too far, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or notice your heart racing, especially when standing up quickly. The good news is that enjoying persimmon as a regular fruit is very unlikely to cause trouble. The concern is more with concentrated persimmon extracts or leaf supplements. Before adding those, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diltiazem page
“Someone on diltiazem (Cardizem, Tiazac) is usually managing blood pressure, angina, or a fast heart rhythm, so this list deserves genuine care. Seven of the 260 ingredients on file carry a major rating, and two of those are things people actually buy: grapefruit, which blocks the enzyme that clears diltiazem and can push its blood leve…”

About Japanese Persimmon
What is Japanese Persimmon?
- High blood pressure
- Cough and hiccups (traditional use)
- Antioxidant support
- Digestive health and fiber
- Skin and general wellness
Japanese persimmon is a nutritious fruit rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidant plant compounds, and its leaves and calyx are used in traditional medicine. While eating the fruit as food is generally safe and healthy, the evidence for concentrated supplements or leaf extracts treating specific conditions is limited. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using persimmon products medicinally.

Some capsule formulations, including Cartia, Cartia XT, and certain generics, are also approved for angina due to coronary artery spasm (sudden chest pain caused by a sudden tightening of a coronary artery).
Injectable forms of diltiazem are used in hospital settings to temporarily slow a dangerously fast heart rate in atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (rapid, irregular heart rhythms), and to restore a normal heart rhythm in paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) — sudden episodes of a very fast but regular heartbeat originating above the heart's lower chambers.
