Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Java Tea interacts with.

Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that Java tea has antihypertensive effects. Further, animal research suggests that Java tea has diuretic properties. Theoretically, taking Java tea with other antihypertensive drugs might increase the effects and risk for hypotension with these drugs.

Here's the simple version. Your Moduretic combo (amiloride plus hydrochlorothiazide) already lowers blood pressure and acts as a water pill. Java Tea is thought to do similar things, nudging blood pressure down a bit and making your kidneys pass more urine. Stack the two together and those effects could add up.

What that might look like in real life: feeling dizzy or lightheaded (especially standing up), more frequent bathroom trips, or feeling extra tired or dehydrated. Keep in mind this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how Java Tea is believed to work rather than strong human studies. Still, since you're on a blood pressure medicine, I'd run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding Java Tea, and don't change your prescription on your own.

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
