Java Tea and Ammonium Chloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Ammonium Chloride

Ammonium Chloride falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Java Tea interacts with.

Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that Java tea has antihypertensive effects. Further, animal research suggests that Java tea has diuretic properties. Theoretically, taking Java tea with other antihypertensive drugs might increase the effects and risk for hypotension with these drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest version: this interaction was filed under blood pressure medicines, but Ammonium Chloride isn't really one of those. It's mostly used as a urinary acidifier and to help correct certain chloride or acid-base imbalances in the body. So the classic worry, Java Tea's mild diuretic and possible blood-pressure-lowering effect stacking on top of a blood pressure drug, doesn't fit Ammonium Chloride very neatly.

That said, both Java Tea (as a gentle diuretic) and Ammonium Chloride affect fluid and electrolyte balance through the kidneys. Combining them could nudge your hydration or salt levels. Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on pharmacology rather than solid human studies. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your kidneys aren't perfect, before pairing the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ammonium Chloride page

“Ammonium chloride, an old drug still used to acidify the urine and correct certain acid-base imbalances, sits in caution territory in my read of this page. Most of the interactions on file involve supplements that push blood pressure up or down or that compound the fluid and potassium shifts tied to its use, and a smaller set can chang…”

About Java Tea

What is Java Tea?

  • Urinary tract health
  • Mild fluid retention
  • Kidney and bladder support
  • Mild diuretic ('water pill') effect
  • Digestive complaints

Java Tea is a Southeast Asian herb traditionally used as a gentle diuretic and for urinary tract and kidney support. Some early lab, animal, and small human studies are encouraging, but high-quality evidence in people is limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
