DIURETIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ammonium Chloride
Ammonium Chloride falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Oleander interacts with.
Concomitant use of potassium depleting diuretics and oleander can increase the risk of cardiac glycoside toxicity due to potassium depletion.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
First, the big picture: I really don't want you using oleander at all. It's a poisonous plant whose heart-acting chemicals work a lot like digoxin, and even tiny amounts can throw your heart rhythm dangerously off. There's no safe dose for self-use.
Now, about ammonium chloride. It's sometimes grouped with diuretics and can be used to make urine more acidic or to correct certain salt and acid imbalances. The theoretical worry here is that medicines affecting your body's mineral balance (especially anything that lowers potassium) can make oleander's heart toxicity worse. Low potassium makes the heart far more sensitive to these glycosides, raising the risk of irregular or dangerous heartbeats. This is based on pharmacology reasoning, not strong studies, but the stakes are too high to gamble. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with oleander.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ammonium Chloride page
“Ammonium chloride, an old drug still used to acidify the urine and correct certain acid-base imbalances, sits in caution territory in my read of this page. Most of the interactions on file involve supplements that push blood pressure up or down or that compound the fluid and potassium shifts tied to its use, and a smaller set can chang…”

About Oleander
What is Oleander?
- Heart failure (traditional)
- Cancer (investigational)
- Skin conditions
- Asthma (folk use)
- Pain relief (folk use)
Oleander is a highly poisonous ornamental plant, and every part of it can cause life-threatening heart and nervous system effects, even in small amounts. There is no proven safe dose for self-use, and serious poisonings and deaths have occurred from teas, extracts, and accidental ingestion. We strongly advise against using oleander as a supplement.
