Why this applies to Fluticasone

Fluticasone falls under CORTICOSTEROIDS — the group Oleander interacts with.

Theoretically, using oleander with prolonged corticosteroid therapy can increase the risk of oleander toxicity.
Oleander contains cardiac glycosides. Concomitant use of corticosteroids with oleander can increase the therapeutic and adverse effects of long-term corticosteroid use due to potassium depletion and electrolyte imbalance.

First, the big picture: oleander is genuinely poisonous and isn't something I'd ever recommend taking. The concern when it's paired with fluticasone (whether you use the Flonase nasal spray or the Flovent/Seretide inhaler) isn't about the steroid getting stronger or weaker in the usual sense. It's about potassium.

Fluticasone is a corticosteroid, and steroids used over a long time can gradually lower your potassium. Oleander's heart-acting compounds become much more dangerous when potassium runs low, raising the risk of irregular, life-threatening heartbeats. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not hard clinical proof, and short-term inhaled or nasal use makes much less of your fluticasone reach the bloodstream. Still, please don't take oleander, and check with your pharmacist or doctor.
