Java Tea and Epoprostenol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Epoprostenol

Epoprostenol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Java Tea interacts with.

Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that Java tea has antihypertensive effects. Further, animal research suggests that Java tea has diuretic properties. Theoretically, taking Java tea with other antihypertensive drugs might increase the effects and risk for hypotension with these drugs.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Epoprostenol (Flolan) is a powerful medicine given through a continuous IV pump to widen blood vessels and lower pressure in the lungs for people with pulmonary hypertension. One of its built-in effects is lowering blood pressure throughout the body. Java Tea, on the other hand, may gently nudge blood pressure down too and acts as a mild diuretic, meaning it makes you pass more fluid.

Stack those two together and, in theory, you could lean toward low blood pressure, with symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, a faster heartbeat, or feeling faint when you stand. I'll be honest: this is based on how these things work, not solid human studies. Still, because Epoprostenol is such a strong, finely-dosed drug, please loop in your care team before adding Java Tea.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Epoprostenol page

“American hellebore tops my concerns for anyone on epoprostenol (Flolan), the continuous infusion that opens blood vessels in the lungs to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. The herb lowers blood pressure even in small doses, and stacked on a medicine that already relaxes those vessels, the drop can be dangerous.”

About Java Tea

What is Java Tea?

  • Urinary tract health
  • Mild fluid retention
  • Kidney and bladder support
  • Mild diuretic ('water pill') effect
  • Digestive complaints

Java Tea is a Southeast Asian herb traditionally used as a gentle diuretic and for urinary tract and kidney support. Some early lab, animal, and small human studies are encouraging, but high-quality evidence in people is limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
