Epoprostenol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Betony interacts with.

Theoretically, betony might have additive effects with blood pressure lowering drugs due to hypotensive activity of the glycosides found in betony. It might also interfere with the activity of pressor drugs. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Epoprostenol (Flolan) is a powerful medication given by continuous IV infusion to open up blood vessels in the lungs for pulmonary hypertension. One of its main effects, and side effects, is lowering your blood pressure throughout the body. Betony may have a mild blood pressure lowering effect of its own, so combining the two could, in theory, push your pressure lower than intended.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, flushed, or faint, especially when standing up. I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical and based on betony's plant chemistry, not on solid human studies. Still, since Flolan is a serious medication that's carefully dose-adjusted, please run any betony use by your doctor or pharmacist first rather than adding it on your own.

What Is Epoprostenol Used For?

Epoprostenol (available as the brands Epoprostenol, Flolan, and Veletri) is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — WHO Group 1, a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. The goal is to improve how much physical activity patients can handle.

The clinical studies that established its effectiveness included mainly patients with moderate-to-severe symptoms (NYHA Functional Class III–IV) whose PAH was idiopathic (no known cause), heritable (genetic), or related to connective tissue diseases such as scleroderma.
