Here's the gist: betony has been traditionally linked to a mild blood pressure lowering effect, thanks to certain plant compounds (glycosides) it contains. Since spironolactone already works to bring your blood pressure down and pull off extra fluid, pairing the two could, in theory, nudge your pressure a little lower than expected. That might leave you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or extra tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This concern is theoretical and based on how betony might act, not on solid human studies. For most people it's a minor issue, but if you take spironolactone, please run betony by your pharmacist or doctor first, and don't change anything on your own.

What Is Spironolactone Used For?

Brand names: Aldactone, Spiroton, Carospir

Spironolactone tablets (including Aldactone) are used to treat moderate-to-severe heart failure, high blood pressure, and fluid retention (edema) caused by liver cirrhosis or nephrotic syndrome. They are also used to diagnose and manage primary hyperaldosteronism — a condition where the adrenal glands produce too much of the hormone aldosterone.

Spironolactone oral suspension shares several of these uses — heart failure, high blood pressure, and edema from liver cirrhosis — but is not the same as Aldactone and is not therapeutically interchangeable with it. Your prescriber will choose the right form for your situation.
