Why this applies to Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina

Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Java Tea interacts with.

Some preliminary clinical evidence suggests that Java tea has antihypertensive effects. Further, animal research suggests that Java tea has diuretic properties. Theoretically, taking Java tea with other antihypertensive drugs might increase the effects and risk for hypotension with these drugs.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Rauzide already does two big things to lower your blood pressure: the bendroflumethiazide is a water pill that pulls extra fluid out through your kidneys, and the rauwolfia relaxes your blood vessels. Java Tea is thought to add a mild diuretic and gentle blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. So you'd essentially be stacking two things that push in the same direction.

The concern, which is mostly theoretical and based on early research, is that the combination could drop your pressure too low. Watch for dizziness, lightheadedness when standing, feeling faint, or unusual fatigue. Honestly, I wouldn't add Java Tea on your own. Run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since you also have your fluid and salt balance to consider.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Bendroflumethiazide, Rauwolfia Serpentina page

“Rauzide combines two blood-pressure medicines, the thiazide diuretic bendroflumethiazide and rauwolfia serpentina, so anything that also lowers pressure, pulls off fluid, or shifts electrolytes lands on already sensitive ground. This page warrants real caution.”

About Java Tea

What is Java Tea?

  • Urinary tract health
  • Mild fluid retention
  • Kidney and bladder support
  • Mild diuretic ('water pill') effect
  • Digestive complaints

Java Tea is a Southeast Asian herb traditionally used as a gentle diuretic and for urinary tract and kidney support. Some early lab, animal, and small human studies are encouraging, but high-quality evidence in people is limited, so it should not replace proven treatments. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have kidney problems or take other medicines.
