Here's the simple version: karaya gum is a bulky fiber that swells into a gel when it hits water in your gut. That gel can grab onto a pill like crizotinib (Xalkori) and slightly change how much of it your body soaks up. The effect could go either way, more, less, or none at all, and honestly this concern is theoretical, based on how fiber laxatives behave rather than real-world reports with this exact drug.

Still, crizotinib is a cancer medicine where steady absorption matters, so I wouldn't want it nudged in either direction. An easy fix: take your crizotinib first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the karaya gum, and drink plenty of water. Please run this by your oncology pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

Karaya gum is a natural plant gum from the Sterculia tree that is mostly used as a bulk-forming laxative and as a thickener or adhesive in food, dental, and ostomy products. As a fiber-type laxative it may help with occasional constipation, but high-quality evidence is limited, and it should be taken with plenty of water to avoid choking or blockage. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have swallowing problems or bowel conditions.

About Crizotinib

What Is Crizotinib Used For?

Brand name: Xalkori

Xalkori (crizotinib) is used to treat adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for the ALK or ROS1 gene abnormality, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Xalkori is also used to treat pediatric patients aged 1 year and older and young adults with relapsed or refractory systemic ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Additionally, it treats adult and pediatric patients aged 1 year and older with unresectable, recurrent, or refractory ALK-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). Note: Xalkori's safety and effectiveness in older adults with relapsed or refractory ALK-positive ALCL have not been established.
