American hellebore, also known as Veratrum viride, contains alkaloids that can potentially prolong the QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG). Combining American hellebore with other drugs that cause QT-prolongation can increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the concern with pairing these two. Crizotinib (Xalkori) is a cancer medicine that can stretch out your heart's electrical cycle, something doctors call QT prolongation. American Hellebore contains powerful, frankly toxic alkaloids that can do the very same thing, plus drop your heart rate and blood pressure on their own. Stack them together and you raise the risk of a dangerous, fast heart rhythm called torsades de pointes.

Signs to never ignore would be fainting, a fluttering or pounding heartbeat, or sudden dizziness. The evidence here is more theoretical than proven, but the stakes are high because Hellebore is genuinely poisonous. I'd steer clear of it entirely while on crizotinib and check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Crizotinib

What Is Crizotinib Used For?

Brand name: Xalkori

Xalkori (crizotinib) is used to treat adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for the ALK or ROS1 gene abnormality, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Xalkori is also used to treat pediatric patients aged 1 year and older and young adults with relapsed or refractory systemic ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Additionally, it treats adult and pediatric patients aged 1 year and older with unresectable, recurrent, or refractory ALK-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). Note: Xalkori's safety and effectiveness in older adults with relapsed or refractory ALK-positive ALCL have not been established.
