Here is the gist with kefir and Rituxan (rituximab). Rituximab is an infused antibody that quiets part of your immune system by lowering certain white blood cells (your B-cells). It is not broken down by gut enzymes, so kefir does not change its blood levels. The concern is different: kefir is a live food, packed with active bacteria and yeast, and a calmed-down immune system may have a harder time keeping those microbes in check.

Honestly, this worry is theoretical and comes from lab-type reasoning, not real patient reports, so for most people a normal serving is likely fine. Still, since rituximab can leave you more open to infections, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first, especially if your counts are low or your immune system is fragile.

What Is Rituximab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Rituxan

Rituximab is used to treat a range of blood cancers and immune-driven diseases. In cancer care, it targets certain types of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) — both in adults and, for some lymphomas, in children as young as 6 months old.

Beyond cancer, rituximab is also approved for moderately-to-severely active Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in adults who haven't responded well to other treatments, as well as for two rare inflammatory blood vessel diseases — Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) and Microscopic Polyangiitis (MPA) — and for a serious skin blistering condition called Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV).
