Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to keep in mind with kefir and Copanlisib (Aliqopa). This isn't about kefir changing how your body breaks down the drug. It's about the live bacteria and yeast that kefir naturally contains. Copanlisib can weaken your immune system as part of how it fights the lymphoma, so in theory those live microbes could have an easier time causing an infection.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this concern is theoretical and comes from lab-type reasoning, not real-world studies in people. So it's worth a conversation, not a panic. If you're on Copanlisib, please check with your oncology team before adding kefir or other probiotics, since they know your blood counts and infection risk best. Don't change anything on your own.

About Kefir

What is Kefir?

  • Digestive health
  • Source of probiotics
  • Lactose intolerance support
  • General immune support
  • Gut microbiome balance

Kefir is a fermented drink made by adding kefir grains to milk (or sugar water), creating a tangy beverage rich in probiotics. It is generally a safe, nutritious food that may support gut health, but strong evidence for treating specific medical conditions is still limited. If you have a weakened immune system or other health concerns, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
