Here's the thing to keep in mind: methylprednisolone (Medrol) calms down your immune system to fight inflammation. Kefir, on the other hand, is a living food packed with active bacteria and yeast. The worry is that when your immune defenses are dialed back by the steroid, those live microbes could, in theory, take hold and cause an infection more easily than they would in someone with a fully active immune system.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. This concern comes only from lab and animal-type reasoning, not from strong human studies, so for most healthy folks on a short Medrol course it's likely a low risk. But if you're on higher doses, long-term steroids, or already have a weakened immune system, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding kefir.

What Is Methylprednisolone Used For?

Brand names: Medrol, Medrol Dosepak

Methylprednisolone tablets (Medrol, Methylpred DP) are used to treat a broad set of conditions including endocrine disorders, rheumatic and joint conditions, autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, severe allergic states, skin diseases, eye inflammation, breathing disorders like asthma, blood and kidney diseases, and certain cancers.

Methylprednisolone acetate injection (Depo-Medrol and others) is used by intramuscular injection when oral therapy isn't feasible, and can also be given directly into joints, soft tissue, or lesions to treat local inflammation from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, and skin disorders. The injection is not approved for intrathecal (spinal) use.
