Here's the thing to keep in mind with prednisolone: this steroid calms down your immune system. That's helpful for things like arthritis, allergic reactions, or protecting a transplant, but it also means your body is a little less able to fight off germs. Kefir is a fermented drink that's full of live bacteria and yeast, so the worry is whether those live microbes could get a foothold and cause an infection (think yeast infections or an upset gut) when your defenses are turned down.

I want to be honest that this concern is mostly theoretical, based on lab thinking rather than real patient reports, so most healthy people taking prednisolone tolerate kefir just fine. But if you're on high doses, on it long term, or already have a weakened immune system, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before making kefir a regular habit.

Prednisolone is prescribed for many different conditions where inflammation or an overactive immune system is causing harm. These range from severe allergic reactions and asthma to certain skin diseases, blood disorders, eye problems, and some cancers.

It is also used to support the body when the adrenal glands aren't making enough of their own steroids, and to manage flares of conditions like ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney condition causing protein loss in the urine).
