Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: kefir is a fermented drink full of live bacteria and yeast. The concern on file is that in people whose immune system is dialed down, those live microbes could occasionally cause an infection. With Qvar or QNASL (beclomethasone), though, that worry is pretty mild. This is an inhaled or nasal steroid that works mostly right in your airways or nose, so it doesn't suppress your whole-body immune system the way pills or transplant medicines do.

One thing I'll mention: inhaled steroids can already cause oral thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth). Rinsing and spitting after each dose helps a lot. This kefir caution is theoretical and based on lab thinking, not real cases. If your immune system is weakened for another reason, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
