L-arginine and Testosterone Undecanoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

In clinical research, L-arginine increases the level of testosterone in male patients with erectile dysfunction. The clinical significance of this finding is unclear.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the honest picture: when you pair L-arginine with your testosterone undecanoate (Jatenzo, Aveed, and similar), the concern is mostly theoretical. Some research in men with erectile dysfunction found that L-arginine nudged testosterone levels up a little, but no one really knows if that adds up to anything meaningful when you're already on prescription testosterone. The idea is simply that the two might have a small additive effect.

In plain terms, this is a low-worry combination for most people. If anything were to happen, you might notice the usual testosterone-related effects, like acne, mood changes, or fluid retention. I wouldn't expect L-arginine to throw your therapy off, but since both can affect blood pressure too, please run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you have heart concerns.

About L-arginine

L-arginine
  • High blood pressure
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Athletic performance
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Improving blood flow

L-arginine is an amino acid that the body uses to make nitric oxide, a substance that helps blood vessels relax and widen. It is popularly used for blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, and exercise, but the evidence is mixed and stronger for some uses than others. It is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have heart problems or take other medicines.

About Testosterone Injection

What Is Testosterone Injection Used For?

Brand names: Andriol, Aveed, Jatenzo, Kyzatrex

Testosterone injection is primarily used in men whose bodies do not produce enough testosterone on their own — a condition called hypogonadism. This includes primary hypogonadism (a problem with the testicles themselves, such as from injury, infection, or surgery) and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (caused by problems in the brain's hormone signaling from the hypothalamus or pituitary gland). It is also used to stimulate puberty in carefully selected adolescent males with clearly delayed puberty who have not responded to other support.

Testosterone Enanthate Injection is also approved for use in women with advanced, inoperable metastatic breast cancer (specifically skeletal metastases) who are one to five years past menopause, or in premenopausal women with hormone-responsive breast cancer who have had their ovaries removed. This use should be directed by an oncologist. Aveed (testosterone undecanoate) is specifically approved for male hypogonadism only.
