Captopril falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group L-arginine interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and antihypertensive drugs may increase the risk of hypotension.
L-arginine increases nitric oxide, which causes vasodilation. Clinical evidence shows that L-arginine can reduce blood pressure in some individuals with hypertension. Furthermore, combining L-arginine with some antihypertensive drugs seems to have additive vasodilating and blood pressure-lowering effects.

Here is the simple version: captopril already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing and widening your blood vessels. L-arginine works through a different door, your body turns it into nitric oxide, which also tells blood vessels to relax. So when you stack the two together, their effects can add up, and your pressure may drop more than you expect.

What that can feel like is dizziness, lightheadedness, a headache, or feeling faint when you stand up quickly. This is a theory based on how both work, not a strongly proven effect, so it does not happen to everyone. Still, if you take captopril and want to try L-arginine, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on your readings at home.

Captopril also falls under ACE INHIBITORS (ACEIs).

Theoretically, concomitant use of L-arginine and ACE inhibitors may increase the risk for hypotension and hyperkalemia.
Combining L-arginine with some antihypertensive drugs, especially ACE inhibitors, seems to have additive vasodilating and blood pressure-lowering effects. Furthermore, ACE inhibitors can increase potassium levels. Use of L-arginine has been associated with hyperkalemia in some patients. Theoretically, concomitant use of ACE inhibitors with L-arginine may increases the risk of hyperkalemia.

Here's the gist with captopril and L-arginine. Captopril works by relaxing your blood vessels so your blood pressure comes down. L-arginine feeds your body's nitric oxide pathway, which also widens blood vessels. Stack them together and the blood pressure lowering can add up, so you might feel too low: dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint, especially when you stand up quickly.

There's a second piece. Captopril can nudge your potassium higher, and L-arginine has been linked to higher potassium too, so the combo could push it up further. To be clear, this concern is theoretical and based on how these work, not on strong studies. Still, if you take captopril and want to try L-arginine, check with your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your pressure and potassium.

L-arginine is an amino acid that the body uses to make nitric oxide, a substance that helps blood vessels relax and widen. It is popularly used for blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, and exercise, but the evidence is mixed and stronger for some uses than others. What Is Captopril Used For?

Brand names: Capoten, Acepril

Captopril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction (weakened pumping function of the heart) in stable patients after a heart attack. For the heart attack indication, it helps improve survival and reduces the chance of developing full heart failure.

Captopril tablets are also used to slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage caused by diabetes) in people with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes who have retinopathy and significant protein in their urine. It reduces the risk of the kidneys failing to the point of needing dialysis or a transplant.
