ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Avibactam Sodium, Ceftazidime
Avibactam Sodium, Ceftazidime falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Gasseri interacts with.
Lactobacillus gasseri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. gasseri preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: Avycaz (ceftazidime and avibactam) is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The catch is that Lactobacillus gasseri is itself a live, friendly bacterium. So if you take them at the same time, the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of the probiotic before it gets a chance to do anything. This doesn't make the Avycaz weaker or more dangerous, it just makes the probiotic less useful.
This is a theoretical concern based on how these products work, not something proven in big studies. Avycaz is also given as an IV in a hospital, so timing usually isn't a daily worry. If you do take the probiotic by mouth, separating it from antibiotic doses by a couple hours can help. Check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Lactobacillus Gasseri
What is Lactobacillus Gasseri?
- Digestive health
- Weight and belly fat management
- Vaginal and urinary health
- Bloating and gut discomfort
- General immune support
Lactobacillus gasseri is a 'friendly' probiotic bacterium found naturally in the human gut, mouth, and vaginal tract, and in some fermented foods. Early research suggests it may help with digestion, weight management, and vaginal health, but the evidence is limited and far from conclusive. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, but anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, or has a weakened immune system should talk to a pharmacist or doctor first.
About Ceftazidime and Avibactam Injection
What Is Ceftazidime and Avibactam Injection Used For?
Brand name: Avycaz
Avycaz (ceftazidime and avibactam) is used to treat three types of serious bacterial infections in adults and children at least 31 weeks gestational age: complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI), complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) including pyelonephritis (a kidney infection), and hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia or ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (HABP/VABP). All three of these infections must be caused by specific susceptible gram-negative bacteria for Avycaz to be effective.
When treating complicated intra-abdominal infections, Avycaz must be used together with metronidazole, another antibiotic. Avycaz is only meant for infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria that it can actually fight — using it otherwise can lead to antibiotic resistance.
