Lavender and Levorphanol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Levorphanol

Levorphanol falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Lavender interacts with.

Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: levorphanol is a strong opioid pain reliever, and one of its built-in effects is making you drowsy and slowing your breathing. Lavender, especially as a concentrated oral oil, may have a mild calming or sedative quality of its own. Put the two together and the worry is a little extra of that same sedation, so you might feel sleepier, foggier, or more lightheaded than usual.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's theoretical, based on lab work, and human studies of oral lavender haven't actually shown people getting drowsy. A whiff of lavender or a small culinary amount is very unlikely to matter. Still, since levorphanol is potent, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Levorphanol page

“Most of the ingredients that interact with levorphanol (Levo-Dromoran) pile onto the same hazard, deeper sedation. Because levorphanol is a potent opioid painkiller, that stacking can slow breathing rather than just cause drowsiness, so this page deserves real vigilance before you add a supplement to it.”

About Lavender

What is Lavender?

Lavender
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Sleep problems
  • Relaxation and calming
  • Minor skin conditions
  • Aromatherapy

Lavender is a fragrant herb most popular for promoting relaxation, easing anxiety, and supporting sleep, with some encouraging evidence for a standardized oral lavender oil product for anxiety. While generally well tolerated, the essential oil should never be swallowed unless made for that purpose, and pregnant or breastfeeding people should use caution and talk to a healthcare provider first.

About Levorphanol

What Is Levorphanol Used For?

Brand name: Levo-Dromoran

Levorphanol Tartrate Tablets are used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid — specifically when non-opioid or other pain treatments haven't provided enough relief or aren't a good fit for the patient.

It is not meant for everyday or mild pain. Prescribers weigh the serious risks of opioid therapy carefully before choosing this medication, and it should be used for only as long as the pain requires it.
