Here's the gist with this combo cold medicine. One of its ingredients, dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab and animal studies, lemongrass — mostly its lemony compound citral — seems to slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more dextromethorphan build up, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. None of these ingredients is a prodrug here, so we're talking about a stronger effect, not a weaker one.

The important part: this is based only on test-tube and animal research, not real people, and the herbal amount in tea or cooking is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements or the essential oil are a bigger question mark, so check with your pharmacist before pairing them.

This Coricidin product combines three medicines, and the one most affected here is the acetaminophen (the Tylenol-type pain and fever reducer). Your liver clears acetaminophen partly through a process called glucuronidation. In lab and animal studies, lemongrass and its lemony compound citral seem to speed up that pathway. In theory, that could clear acetaminophen a little faster and lower its levels, meaning slightly weaker fever or pain relief.

Here's the honest part: this is based only on test-tube and animal research, so it's theoretical and not something proven in people. Everyday cooking or a cup of lemongrass tea is very unlikely to matter. If you regularly use concentrated lemongrass supplements or the essential oil, just mention it to your pharmacist before combining them.
