Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lemongrass interacts with.

Theoretically, lemongrass might decrease the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the gist for Deflazacort (Emflaza): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to switch this drug into its active form and then clear it. Lemongrass, mostly through a compound called citral, may slow that same enzyme down. If that happens, more active drug could hang around longer, which can nudge up the usual steroid side effects like puffiness, mood or sleep changes, higher blood sugar, fluid retention, and a greater chance of infection over time.

The good news is that this is theoretical, based only on animal and lab studies, so we don't really know if it matters in people. A bit of lemongrass tea or seasoning in food is unlikely to be a problem. Concentrated supplements or the essential oil are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before using those.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
