Dolutegravir falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS — the group Lemongrass interacts with.

Theoretically, lemongrass might increase the clearance and decrease the levels of glucuronidated drugs.
Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral induce uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase (UGT), the major phase 2 enzyme that is responsible for glucuronidation.

Here's the gist for your HIV medicine. Your body clears dolutegravir mainly through a process called glucuronidation (an enzyme called UGT). Lemongrass, and its main aromatic compound citral, may gently speed up that same enzyme. In theory, that could clear dolutegravir out of your body a bit faster and lower its blood levels. Since this drug works by keeping HIV suppressed, lower levels are the concern here, not extra side effects.

Now, the honest part: this comes only from lab and animal studies, so we don't truly know if it happens in people. A cup of lemongrass tea or cooking with it is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated supplements or the essential oil are a different story. Because keeping HIV controlled is so important, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding any lemongrass supplement.

About Dolutegravir

What Is Dolutegravir Used For?

Brand name: Tivicay

Dolutegravir — sold as Tivicay and Tivicay PD — is used in combination with other HIV medicines to treat HIV-1 infection. It is approved for adults who are new to treatment or who have taken HIV medicines before, and for children who are at least 4 weeks old and meet minimum weight requirements, as long as they have not previously taken an integrase inhibitor.

Tivicay (the tablet form) has an additional use: it can be paired with rilpivirine as a complete two-drug regimen for adults whose HIV is already well controlled (viral load under 50 copies/mL) on a stable regimen for at least 6 months, with no history of treatment failure or resistance to either drug.
