Lemongrass + Tamoxifen Citrate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Lemongrass interacts with whole categories of medication. Tamoxifen Citrate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Lemongrass in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Tamoxifen Citrate
Tamoxifen Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Lemongrass interacts with.
Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral inhibit CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's something worth knowing about tamoxifen: it's actually a prodrug. Your body has to convert it into its active forms (like endoxifen) before it can do its job protecting against breast cancer. Several liver enzymes handle that conversion, including CYP3A4.
Lab and animal studies suggest lemongrass — and its main aromatic compound, citral — might slow down CYP3A4. In theory, slowing that enzyme could shift how tamoxifen is processed. But honestly, the evidence here is very thin and only comes from test tubes and animals, not people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over the lemongrass in your cooking or an occasional cup of tea. The real question marks are around concentrated lemongrass supplements or the essential oil. Since tamoxifen is too important to leave to guesswork, please run any lemongrass supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS
2 of 2Tamoxifen Citrate also falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS.
Animal research shows that lemongrass and its constituent citral induce uridine diphosphoglucuronosyl transferase (UGT), the major phase 2 enzyme that is responsible for glucuronidation.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for tamoxifen and lemongrass. Your body clears tamoxifen partly through a process called glucuronidation, which tags the drug so you can flush it out. In animal and lab studies, lemongrass (and its citral compound) seemed to speed up that tagging enzyme. In theory, that could move tamoxifen out of your system a little faster and nudge its levels down.
Why does that matter? Tamoxifen works hard to keep breast cancer from coming back, so anything that might weaken it deserves a second look. That said, this is theoretical and based only on animal data, not people. A cup of lemongrass tea or seasoning your food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated supplements or the essential oil are the bigger question mark, so please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before using those.

About Lemongrass
What is Lemongrass?
- Digestive upset
- Anxiety and stress
- Antimicrobial/antifungal
- Insect repellent
- Flavoring in food and drinks
Lemongrass is a fragrant tropical grass widely used as a cooking herb, a tea, and an aromatherapy oil. It is generally considered safe in the small amounts used in food, but most of its claimed health benefits come from laboratory or animal studies rather than strong human research. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements or the essential oil, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
About Tamoxifen
What Is Tamoxifen Used For?
Brand names: Nolvadex, Soltamox
Tamoxifen is used to treat metastatic breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread) in both women and men, and as adjuvant (after-surgery) therapy for early-stage breast cancer in women. It also reduces the occurrence of cancer in the opposite breast when used as adjuvant therapy.
In women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) — a very early, non-invasive form of breast cancer — tamoxifen is used after breast surgery and radiation to reduce the risk of developing invasive breast cancer. It is also approved to reduce the incidence of breast cancer in women who are at high risk but have not yet been diagnosed. Soltamox (oral solution) is specifically indicated for all of these uses in adult patients.
