PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
Why this applies to Brompheniramine, Dextromethorphan, Phenylephrine
Brompheniramine, Dextromethorphan, Phenylephrine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Lime interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about this one: it has nothing to do with how your body breaks down Dimetapp DM. The concern is on your skin. Lime oil contains compounds (called furanocoumarins) that can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Some medicines can do the same, and the worry is that combining them might raise the odds of a sunburn-like reaction, sometimes called phototoxicity.
But the evidence here is very weak, only lab and animal studies, and it's mostly tied to concentrated lime essential oil on the skin, not the splash of lime in your drink or cooking. Drinking water with lime while taking Dimetapp DM is not something I'd lose sleep over. If you use lime oil topically and spend time in the sun, just use sunscreen and check with your pharmacist.

About Lime
What is Lime?
- Source of vitamin C
- Digestive upset
- Skin care
- Mood and aromatherapy
- Flavoring and food preservation
Lime is a common citrus fruit and a good natural source of vitamin C and plant antioxidants. As a food it is generally safe and enjoyed by most people, but evidence that lime treats any specific health condition is limited. Use the essential oil with care, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated lime products for health reasons.
