Lime and Danazol

PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Danazol

Danazol falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Lime interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of lime oil with photosensitizing drugs may increase the risk of phototoxicity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for danazol and lime. Danazol can make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight, and certain compounds in lime, mainly the oils found in lime peel and lime essential oil, can do the same thing. Put them together and the theory is that you might burn or react to the sun a bit more easily, with redness, irritation, or a rash on exposed skin.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's based on lab and animal data only, so it's more of a 'good to know' than a real alarm. Drinking lime juice or having a wedge in your water almost certainly won't matter. The bigger concern would be slathering on concentrated lime oil and then going out in strong sun. Use sunscreen, and check with your pharmacist if you're unsure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Danazol page

“Activated charcoal carries the only major rating on danazol's list. Danazol treats endometriosis, fibrocystic breast disease, and hereditary angioedema, conditions where a weakened dose has real consequences, and charcoal can soak up the drug in the gut before it reaches the blood.”

About Lime

What is Lime?

Lime
  • Source of vitamin C
  • Digestive upset
  • Skin care
  • Mood and aromatherapy
  • Flavoring and food preservation

Lime is a common citrus fruit and a good natural source of vitamin C and plant antioxidants. As a food it is generally safe and enjoyed by most people, but evidence that lime treats any specific health condition is limited. Use the essential oil with care, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated lime products for health reasons.

About Danazol

What Is Danazol Used For?

Brand names: Cyclomen, Danocrine

Danazol capsules are used to treat endometriosis — a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, causing pain and sometimes infertility. It works by suppressing the hormonal cycle that drives this abnormal tissue growth.

Danazol capsules are also used to prevent attacks of hereditary angioedema — a genetic condition that causes episodes of severe swelling in the skin, abdomen, face, and airway. All types of attacks (cutaneous, abdominal, and laryngeal) can be prevented with danazol.
