Lime and Trimipramine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS

Why this applies to Trimipramine

Trimipramine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Lime interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of lime oil with photosensitizing drugs may increase the risk of phototoxicity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the deal with this one: trimipramine can make your skin a little more sensitive to sunlight, which is true for several tricyclic antidepressants. Lime, specifically lime oil applied to the skin, contains compounds that can also boost sun sensitivity. So in theory, putting the two together might raise your chance of a sunburn-like reaction or rash on exposed skin.

I want to keep this in perspective. This concern comes from lab and animal data only, not real patient cases, so it's more of a theoretical caution. Squeezing lime into your food or drink is very unlikely to matter. The bigger thing is simply practicing good sun habits while on trimipramine. If you use concentrated lime oil on your skin, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Trimipramine page

“If you take trimipramine (Surmontil), a tricyclic antidepressant, read this list carefully. Nine of the 139 supplements and herbs on file are rated major, and most touch the heart: several, grapefruit among them, can stretch the QT interval, the heart's electrical reset time, and raise the risk of a dangerous rhythm.”

About Lime

What is Lime?

Lime
  • Source of vitamin C
  • Digestive upset
  • Skin care
  • Mood and aromatherapy
  • Flavoring and food preservation

Lime is a common citrus fruit and a good natural source of vitamin C and plant antioxidants. As a food it is generally safe and enjoyed by most people, but evidence that lime treats any specific health condition is limited. Use the essential oil with care, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated lime products for health reasons.

About Trimipramine

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Brand names: Surmontil, Trimip, Rhotrimine, Tripramine, Trimp

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
