Pentobarbitone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Here's the simple version: pentobarbitone is a barbiturate, a powerful sedative that calms the brain and slows the central nervous system. Magnolia bark seems to work in a similar direction. Lab and animal studies suggest its compounds (honokiol and magnolol) can have a calming effect, partly through the same GABA pathways your barbiturate acts on.

So the worry is an additive one: stacking two sedatives may deepen drowsiness, sluggish breathing, low blood pressure, and confusion. This concern comes from test-tube and animal research, not solid human studies, and large concentrated supplement doses matter far more than a sip of magnolia tea. Still, with a drug this strong, please don't combine them without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.
