Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Pentobarbitone
Pentobarbitone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group California Poppy interacts with.
Laboratory research shows that California poppy has sedative effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Pentobarbitone (a barbiturate) is already a strong sedative. It works by calming activity in your brain, which is why it can cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, low blood pressure, and grogginess. California poppy is thought to have its own mild calming effect, possibly through the same GABA pathways your brain uses to relax.
So putting these two together could, in theory, deepen that sedation. You might feel more sleepy, foggy, or unsteady than expected. I'll be honest though, this concern comes mostly from lab and animal research, not human studies, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Still, because pentobarbitone is potent, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pentobarbitone page
“Pentobarbitone is a barbiturate, one of the older and heavier sedatives, and the gap between a dose that helps sleep and one that slows breathing too far is not a generous one. That is why I read this particular list with genuine concern.”
