Secobarbital Sodium falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Magnolia interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Here's the simple version: Seconal (secobarbital) is a barbiturate that already works by quieting brain activity to help you sleep. Magnolia bark may have its own mild calming action in the body, partly through the same GABA pathways your secobarbital affects. Stacking two things that both slow the brain can add up, so the worry is too much sedation, not too little.

In real life that could mean heavy drowsiness, slowed breathing, confusion, dizziness, or feeling groggy and unsteady the next day. I'll be honest though, this is based on lab and animal studies, not solid human trials, and small culinary amounts are unlikely to matter much. Still, before pairing concentrated magnolia supplements with Seconal, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
